Probiotic and lactic acid bacteria fermentation
Food-grade MRS media and dedicated nitrogen sources from strain activation to production scale-up

THE SITUATION AND THE PAIN POINTS
Lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria are nutritionally demanding and sensitive to oxygen and pH; the quality of the medium's nitrogen source directly affects cell counts and viability. Probiotic products also frequently require Halal, vegetarian, or animal-free labelling, which rules out conventional formulations containing beef extract.
OUR APPROACH
STBIO supplies standard MRS as well as food-grade, Halal-certified MRS agar and broth that replace animal components with plant- and yeast-derived nitrogen, together with soy, yeast, and pea peptones designed for lactic acid bacteria as the main nitrogen source in production fermentation. All products are manufactured from food-grade raw materials with a batch COA.
- Food-grade, Halal-certified MRS range with no animal components
- Yeast peptones rich in B vitamins and nucleotides for high-density fermentation
- Agar for counting and broth for scale-up on the same formulation base
- Nitrogen-source combinations recommended per strain: Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus

Frequently asked questions
01Can MRS be used for Bifidobacterium?
It works as a base, but bifidobacteria need strict anaerobiosis and usually a reducing agent such as cysteine; for selective isolation use a dedicated Bifidobacterium medium.
02Do I have to use MRS for production fermentation?
No. MRS is the standard for research and QC but relatively costly; most customers formulate a production medium from peptone, yeast extract, and a sugar source. We can recommend a nitrogen combination and starting dose for your strain.
