Soy Peptones (Soy Peptone, Soytone)

A plant nitrogen source made by enzymatic hydrolysis of soy protein, rich in both peptides and carbohydrates. A standard ingredient of the Tryptic Soy family and the first choice for animal-free formulations.

Soy peptone (often sold as soytone) is made by enzymatic hydrolysis of soy protein. It has a broad peptide profile and keeps the carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins of the bean, so its nutrition is more complete than a plain protein hydrolysate. It is a standard ingredient of Tryptic Soy Broth and Tryptic Soy Agar, and together with tryptone supports most bacteria and fungi.

Being animal-free, soy peptone is widely used to replace meat peptones in Halal, vegetarian and animal-origin-free formulations, and is common in probiotic, Bacillus and mould fermentation as well as cell culture supplements. Note that soy is a regulated allergen and must be declared on labels.

This page lists the soy peptones supplied by STBIO MEDIA, including non-GMO, clear-solution and Halal-certified versions. Some products are soy and yeast blends, which the tags indicate.

How to choose

  • Animal-free or Halal formulations: soy peptone is the most established replacement for meat peptones.
  • If the final product must be non-GMO: choose products tagged Non-GMO and ask sales for the raw-material statement.
  • Liquid formulations or cell culture: choose a clear-solution grade to avoid turbidity and precipitate.
  • Bacillus, mould or enzyme-production fermentation: the carbohydrate content of soy peptone helps these strains.

Frequently asked questions

01Are soytone and soy peptone the same thing?

Soytone is a trade name for soy peptone; both refer to enzymatic hydrolysates of soy protein. Brands differ in degree of hydrolysis, salt and carbohydrate content, so run a small trial when switching sources.

02Can soy peptone fully replace meat peptone?

For most general-purpose media, yes; the Tryptic Soy family was designed that way. For fastidious strains or formulations that rely on specific growth factors, you may need yeast extract alongside it. Compare growth curves with a sample first.
