Overview
Bifidobacterium Agar is an agar (solid) medium. It is used for selective isolation and counting of bifidobacteria under strict anaerobiosis. STBIO manufactures it from food-grade raw materials in an ISO 22000 certified facility, with a COA for every batch. This is the Halal-certified version.
Principle
Bifidobacterium species are strictly anaerobic, Gram-positive rods that form one of the predominant bacterial populations of the human intestinal tract and are widely used as probiotic cultures in fermented dairy products.¹ Bifidobacterium Agar supports their cultivation and maintenance. Special peptone supplies nitrogen, amino acids, peptides, and the growth factors required by these nutritionally demanding organisms. Dextrose provides the carbon and energy source, and sodium chloride maintains the osmotic equilibrium of the medium. Soluble starch acts as a protective colloid, adsorbing toxic metabolites and shielding the cells from inhibitory substances in the medium. L-Cysteine hydrochloride functions as a reducing agent, lowering the redox potential and establishing the reduced conditions required for the growth of bifidobacteria.² Because the organisms are strict anaerobes, plates must be incubated under anaerobic conditions.

Directions
Suspend 49.3 g of powder in 1 L of purified water. Heat with continuous stirring and bring to the boil for 1 minute. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes. Cool to 45-50°C. Mix well and pour into sterile Petri plates. Incubate under anaerobic conditions. Test the finished medium for performance using stable, standard control cultures.
